def
- •
a Software Process Models based on software reuse
- •
systems are integrated from existing configurable components rather than built from scratch
- •
also known as reuse-oriented software engineering
•
types of reusable elements
- •
stand-alone application systems (COTS — Commercial Off-The-Shelf), configured for a specific environment
- •
collections of objects developed as a package for integration with a component framework (e.g., .NET, J2EE)
- •
web services developed to service standards and available for remote invocation
•
key process stages
1. 1.
  requirements specification
2. 2.
  software discovery and evaluation
3. 3.
  requirements refinement
4. 4.
  application system configuration
5. 5.
  component adaptation and integration
•
advantages
- •
reduced costs and risks — less software is developed from scratch
- •
  faster delivery and deployment
•
disadvantages
- •
requirements compromises are inevitable — the system may not fully meet real user needs
- •
loss of control over the evolution of reused system elements
