CSS Inheritance

Updated 05 Oct 2026

•
What it is
- •
allows selected property values to pass from a parent element to its children when the child has no overriding specified value
•
Examples
- •
text properties such as color commonly inherit
- •
many layout properties, including margins, do not inherit by default
•
Distinction
- •
inheritance is not a selector competition between parent and child
- •
a declaration directly setting a child's property can override an inherited value regardless of the parent selector's specificity
