CSS Grid

Updated 06 Oct 2026

•
What it is
- •
a two-dimensional CSS layout system using rows and columns
•
Concepts
- •
define tracks on the grid container; position participating grid items using grid lines or areas
- •
ordinary nested descendants are not automatically items of an ancestor grid
•
Example
- •
applying grid-column to a grandchild does not place it in the grandparent's grid when its parent remains an ordinary intervening box
- •
posisble solutions include changing the structure or making the relevant wrapper participate in an appropriate grid layout
•
Sizing
- •
minmax(0, 1fr) can allow a flexible track to shrink below its contents’ automatic minimum contribution.
