Flow objects

  Events -> things that start, interrupt, or end a process.

  Activities -> tasks or subprocesses.
- •
  Gateways -> control branching and merging.
- •
  one BPMN example with start/end events, tasks, an exclusive gateway, sequence flow, lanes, and a message flow across pools.

Connecting objects
- •
  Sequence flow -> order of work within one process.
- •
  Message flow -> communication between separate participants or pools.
- •
  Association -> connects an artifact or annotation to a process element.

Swimlanes and artifacts
- •
  Pool -> participant, such as an organization or external party.
- •
  Lane -> role or responsibility within a pool.
- •
  Data object -> information used or produced by an activity.

  Text annotation -> explanatory note.

  Group -> visual grouping of diagram elements.

  Sequence flow -> is not a message flow: one orders work inside a process, the other represents communication across participants.
